Issy & Chris - A Misty Gorwell Barn Wedding in Abbotsbury, Dorset
Some weddings nearly slip through the blogging net. Issy & Chris’s day at Gorwell Barn is one we’re very glad we’ve pulled back into the light – because it had one of those atmospheres you couldn’t recreate even if you tried.
They’d planned for an outdoor ceremony. Early in the year, yes – but let’s be honest, British weather doesn’t care what month it is. And on their day, rain didn’t show up at all.
Instead, the valley filled with fog.
A little venue context
Gorwell Barn sits tucked into its own quiet Dorset valley near Abbotsbury, part of Gorwell Farm, just a short drive from the Jurassic Coast. It’s a restored 17th-century stone barn with space for around 130 guests, licensed for ceremonies indoors and outside, with flexible layout and on-site cottages for guests who want to make a weekend of it.
The outdoor ceremony vision - with a twist of weather magic
Issy & Chris had that simple, confident vision: get married outdoors, keep it natural, and let the day feel like it’s unfolding rather than being staged.
And the fog delivered something better than sunshine ever could.
A soft, misty blanket dropped into the valley and stayed pretty much all day. It turned everything cinematic. Guests appearing out of the haze. A bridal procession materialising through the mist. Quiet reactions landing harder because the scene itself felt otherworldly.
It was ethereal in the truest sense – and completely unrepeatable.
Portraits in the fog - the “money shot” ingredient
That mist came into its own during portraits.
We love shooting with narrow depth of field – letting backgrounds melt away so the couple feels like the only thing in focus. Add fog to that and it’s like the venue hands you an extra layer of atmosphere for free.
No overthinking. No forcing it. Just Issy & Chris, wrapped in softness, looking like they’ve stepped out of a film still.
Keeping guests entertained - Wii wars in the barn
While the day flowed around drinks and chatter, one of the best little guest-lifestyle touches was a Wii console setup with multiple controllers.
Guitar Hero, competitive chaos, and that brilliant mix of people who are suddenly far too serious about a plastic guitar. It kept energy up, gave quieter guests something to do, and created loads of natural reactions – laughter, mock outrage, and a few unexpected “why are you so good at this?” moments.
The Leggomen - and the moment the barn lifts off
As evening rolled in, local band The Leggomen took over and did what they’re known for: ramping the volume, pulling people onto the dancefloor, and turning a chilled day into a proper party. They’ve built a reputation around Dorset weddings for exactly that reason.
The moment they kicked off, the dancefloor stopped being optional.. Wall-to-wall energy -that pulls even the shy ones onto the floor.
Why this wedding stuck with us
This one was all atmosphere.
Not because it was planned within an inch of its life – but because Issy & Chris had a clear vision, trusted the day to unfold, and got a rare gift from the weather.
Fog in a hidden Dorset valley. A barn that glows with warmth. Portraits with that extra ingredient. Guests laughing over Wii games. A band that sent the night off properly.
Issy & Chris – we’re glad this one didn’t stay in the archive.
