If you’ve been searching for a relaxed, nature-rich venue with a big-hearted vibe and endless photography potential, this one’s for you. As a Gorwell Barn wedding photographer, I always look forward to returning to this magical valley near Abbotsbury, Dorset. Tucked away in its own microclimate, Gorwell is one of those rare venues that feels like a warm hug—secluded, flexible, and absolutely bursting with story.
And Jaz & Jake’s day? One of the most heartfelt, emotional weddings I’ve had the pleasure of capturing. From childhood romance to golden-hour ponies!, here’s how their day unfolded.
From Schoolyard to Soulmates
Jaz & Jake’s story reads like a script from the best kind of feel-good movie. They met at school, grew up together, and have been inseparable ever since. Their connection runs deep—woven through their circle of lifelong friends and shared memories that go back decades.
This wasn’t just a wedding—it was the coming together of two lives that had already been intertwining for years. It was emotion, humour, history, and joy all rolled into one perfectly imperfect day.
The Dreamy Dorset Setting
Gorwell Barn is nestled in a valley just outside Weymouth, surrounded by rolling hills, woodlands, and even a peek of Chesil Beach in the distance. It’s a venue I know intimately—I’ve photographed many weddings here, and it’s also where I had one of my own. So yes, it holds a special place in my heart.
With a range of ceremony options—from bluebell woodlands to open hillside views—it’s a gift for any documentary wedding photographer. Jaz & Jake chose to say their vows outdoors, framed by that laid-back Dorset charm, golden light and surrounded by friends, family, and even their dog.

Moments That Mattered
The day began in neighbouring cottages with Jaz & Jake getting ready surrounded by friends. Jaz’s mum Jodie (a creative powerhouse and talented photographer herself) first reached out to me, and it was an honour to be trusted with the stills and the highlight film.
One of the day’s most touching moments? Jaz’s brother walking her down the aisle—a moment that wasn’t guaranteed due to his autism. The emotion was tangible as they made their way to the ceremony together, supported but unpressured. That quiet bravery? Pure poetry.
The ceremony flowed freely and authentically, with no rigid script—just laughter, tears, heartfelt vows, and one proud mum wiping her eyes.
Post-ceremony, drinks were shared, dogs were cuddled, and the barn came alive with the buzz of reunited old friends.
Unscripted Beauty & Golden Hour Perfection
A true Gorwell Barn wedding photographer knows that when golden hour hits, you need to move. With the barn nestled low in the valley, the best light escapes quickly. So we jumped in the car, headed uphill, and landed in a wild patch of gorse and flowers—our secret spot.
As if the universe was in sync, a few ponies wandered into the frame. I mean… come on. Jaz & Jake, backlit by golden light, flowers, and horses? That’s the stuff of wedding dreams.
These are the moments you can’t script—and why I always shoot with instinct and anticipation. The quiet in-between moments. The energy shifts. The unexpected magic.
Personal Touches & Powerful Words
The speeches were a perfect blend of banter and beauty. Jake’s best man, Lincoln, delivered the iconic opening line: “Hello, I’m 31 and looking for love.” Absolute gold.
Jodie, Jaz’s mum, later shared a heartfelt reading of Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet, speaking of marriage not as ownership but as togetherness with space. She then gifted them a personal piece of art—something truly unique.
