‘Generations apart’ is an image that struck me upon first seeing the scene in front of me. Before pressing the shutter button, I knew it had a reflective story to tell.
There are many key parts to any wedding, from the bridal preparations through to the cake cutting. All worthy of recording and many absolutely expected from any photographer.
What I see as being very much a challenge within my photography, is to look further and to capture something different.
This can come easy at some weddings, with the constant flow of energy, people interacting, children playing etc. But often you find there is a lull in the day (albeit short), when people are waiting for room change arounds or the arrival of evening guests.
These are the times when, for me, finding a ‘good’ picture becomes as a fitting challenge to take up.
I recognised potential in this shot upon seeing how the younger guest members had gathered chatting within there own circle, but to the side an elderly couple were just relaxing, quietly enjoying their drinks.
Why I love this picture is because it shows the reality of weddings, with generations coming together, yet of course having their own distinct ways of interacting and enjoying themselves. Balance of two groups and two glasses. Cheers!
