Wedding photography is all about instinct and intuition. So when this opportunity presented itself, I naturally took it.
Bridal preparations are rich in the opportunities presented for documentary wedding photography, with every bride to be going through a familiar routine. Of course this is a familiar routine to a skilled wedding photographer such as myself but not so familiar to our subjects and clients. Yet, each wedding is different and new presenting challenges along with great rewards.
Working as a documentary wedding photographer ‘catching’ these moments in rewarding imagery is what drives us forward, enthusing us in this rich genre.
This image from Kim & Matt’s recent wedding just lept out at me as being a favourite from the moment I pressed the shutter. Kim applying her mascara like any other young woman on her wedding day, but unlike many other wedding photography shots this one clearly shouts out acceptance.
By this I mean that the subject has let the photographer into her world – there is no acknowledgement of the photographer being there. Kim is relaxed and just doing what needs to be done, unaware of a camera lens close by.
Documentary wedding Photography is about being in close, being accepted and the being rewarded with this style of imagery.
The eye dead center of the frame, pulling the viewer in, along with the 45 degree arm framing the face and the mascara, all add to creating a strong image and one I hope that appeals not only to me and other photographers but to the brides to be out there.
