Stockbridge Farm Barn Wedding Photographer - Colin & Alex and the Art of Keeping It Real
Being Stockbridge Farm Barn wedding photographers again was a treat – and Colin & Alex were the perfect couple to bring us back. They didn’t want a wedding day built around photos. They wanted to live it – relaxed, present, and properly in the moment – trusting us to quietly document the truth as it unfolded.
A little venue context
Stockbridge Farm Barn sits on a small working farm in Dorset, just a few miles south of Sherborne, right in Thomas Hardy country.
The barn itself is a standout – a spectacular medieval barn with a warm, character-filled interior, plus courtyard and outdoor space that lets the day spill outside when the weather plays nice.
A scorching day - and the best possible ceremony setting
This was one of those proper summer scorchers. The kind of heat where you’re grateful for shade, cold drinks, and any excuse to step inside.
Luckily, Colin & Alex had their ceremony in the barn – and that cool, dimmed calm of old timber and thick air made it feel like a refuge. It’s one of the reasons we love photographing here: the light is flattering, the atmosphere is instant, and everyone can settle.
"We hate group photos" - music to our ears
From early on, they were clear: they couldn’t stand the idea of endless group shots. They wanted the day to flow naturally, with hugs and hellos happening as they happened.
That aligned perfectly with how we work.
We always guide couples towards keeping group photos minimal – usually around half a dozen key combinations – because every extra one slams the brakes on the best part of the day: the real congratulations, the natural laughter, the moments that don’t repeat. Those are the frames that end up meaning the most.
Colin embraced it completely.
Long before the wedding, family members were already listing every possible group they “needed”, and Colin just kept calmly replying with: “The photographer said only six.”
Legend.
The kind of emotional moments you can’t manufacture
Two moments from the earlier part of the day still sit clearly in our minds.
The first was Alex arriving and meeting the officiants – that split-second where the reality of it hits, and you see her eyes glass over. Not staged. Not performative. Just real.
The second was Colin waiting at the front of the barn. He wiped away a few tears, and behind him his dad stood watching – pride, emotion, love, all sitting in one simple frame. Quiet moments like that are the heartbeat of documentary wedding photography.
Escaping the group-photo vortex
After the ceremony, the usual post-ceremony energy kicked in – people naturally forming their own little groups, grandma being wheeled into the centre, conversations colliding, everyone wanting a piece of the couple.
But Colin could feel the group-photo vortex trying to form. He gave us the nod, and we made the call: we were off for portraits.
A little earlier than expected, but honestly, perfect timing.
We escaped the midday sun and headed for nearby woodland where the light turned dappled and soft, and the temperature dropped instantly. That short window gave Colin & Alex a breather together – just enough quiet to reset, laugh, and be themselves – and it gave us portraits full of depth without turning it into a photoshoot.
That balance is always the goal.
Speeches, laughter, and a day that stayed joyful
Back at the barn, the rest of the celebration was exactly what they’d wanted – relaxed, joyful, and built around people, not a schedule.
There was plenty of laughter throughout the wedding breakfast speeches, the kind of reactions you can’t fake. And because the day never felt over-managed, the fun arrived naturally – not as a performance, but as the inevitable result of two people being surrounded by the right crowd.
By the time we got into the evening, we had a stack of moments that will be tough to narrow down – the kind of wedding where the hardest part is selecting the final set because there are simply too many good frames.
Colin & Alex – thank you. You trusted the process, lived the day, and it showed in every part of the story.
