Pennsylvania Castle Wedding Photographer - Oliver & Margisel’s Sun-Soaked Blessing on the Isle of Portland
If there’s a venue in Dorset that can make you forget you’re in the UK for a moment, it’s Pennsylvania Castle. Cliff-top sea views, Portland stone grandeur, and that salty light rolling in from Church Ope Cove – it has the atmosphere of a far-flung destination without leaving the Jurassic Coast.
Oliver & Margisel’s wedding blessing here is still one of those days that makes us smile when we revisit the frames. Not because it was perfect in a posed, curated way – but because it felt lived-in. Relaxed. Family-led. Full of small details that told you exactly who they are.
A little venue context
Pennsylvania Castle (also known as The Penn) is a Gothic Revival cliff-top estate on the Isle of Portland, overlooking Church Ope Cove. It’s private, secluded, and built for celebrations that feel intimate even when you’ve got a full house.
It also carries a layer of history that’s hard to ignore – including the often-mentioned wartime connection, with Churchill, Eisenhower and de Gaulle said to have visited and discussed plans connected to the Normandy landings.
Morning prep - a home full of hands-on love
The whole day had a wonderfully homely feel, the kind you only get when everyone is involved.
We still remember Margisel’s Venezuelan-born father in the kitchen that morning, slicing serrano ham and prepping a colourful tomato salad like it was the most natural thing in the world. Around him, finishing touches were happening everywhere – the wedding breakfast area coming to life, tables dressed with seaside blues and yellows, and the kind of personal touches that don’t come from Pinterest. They come from people who care.
A relaxed blessing, by design
Oliver and Margisel had already married earlier in the week in London with close family, so this gathering at Pennsylvania Castle was intentionally slower. Less pressure. More presence.
A family friend conducted the blessing, bringing both families together with readings in English and Spanish – a simple touch, but one that made the ceremony feel genuinely shared rather than just witnessed.
The speeches - proper laughs and one unforgettable line
The best man allegedly forgot his scripted speech.
It didn’t matter.
He still landed every beat: warmth, mischief, the right amount of embarrassment, and plenty of laughter for the room – and for our cameras.
And yes, we still remember the moment he asked Oliver and Margisel to stand, hold hands, and face each other… before dropping a darkly funny line about “getting it wrong” and ending up with your murderer. Wild. Completely unexpected. And it brought the house down.
Why this day still matters
Pennsylvania Castle has a rare mix: luxury without stiffness, history without heaviness, and views that make everything feel elevated.
But what made this wedding work was the people. Two families blending easily. Food made by hand. Details that felt personal. A ceremony that was heartfelt, not performative.
Oliver & Margisel – it was a pleasure to be your Pennsylvania Castle wedding photographer. We’d go back tomorrow.
