Dorset wedding photographer
Your wedding. Your people. Dorset as the backdrop.
Smiling Tiger Studios is a wedding photography and film studio based in Weymouth, photographing weddings across Dorset.
We know Dorset well. It’s home.
From country houses and old barns to castles, village churches and celebrations overlooking the coast, it’s an extraordinary place to get married.
At Smiling Tiger Studios, we believe the setting should add to the story, not become the story.
Because ultimately, the story is you.
The people you’ve brought together. The relationships between them. The nervous energy before the ceremony. Someone trying not to cry. Someone else laughing when they really shouldn’t be. The conversations, reactions and little stories unfolding around the edges.
That’s what we look for.
We don’t take you away from your wedding to create the story.
We find the story while you’re living it.
Documentary wedding photography in Dorset
Our approach is simple: the wedding is allowed to happen.
That means we’re not going to spend the day stopping things, constantly repositioning people or manufacturing moments for the camera.
We’ll give you direction when it’s useful.
We’ll organise the family photographs.
We’ll steal you away for a little time together, find some great light and make some beautiful portraits.
Then we’ll give you back to your wedding.
The rest of the time, we’re watching.
The obvious moments matter. But so do the stories happening around them – parents watching from across the room, children creating their own entertainment, friends catching each other’s eye during speeches and all the tiny pieces of human behaviour that make one wedding completely different from another.
You live it. We pay attention.
Dorset is home. But the people are the story.
Dorset gives weddings an enormous range of settings.
There are historic houses and castles, rural barns and estates, intimate village celebrations and a coastline that includes part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
Being based here means we understand the landscape, the distances and, yes, how quickly the weather and light can change.
But knowing Dorset doesn’t mean arriving with a collection of photographs we’ve already decided to make.
Quite the opposite.
Sometimes knowing a venue helps.
Sometimes seeing somewhere relatively fresh is an advantage.
We’ll arrive early, look at what actually exists that day and respond to it – the season, the weather, the light, where your guests are gathering and how you’ve chosen to use the space.
Because your wedding shouldn’t look like the last one we photographed there.
It should look like yours.
The things you didn't see
Here’s the strange thing about your own wedding.
You’ll miss loads of it.
You can’t see the expression on a parent’s face while you’re walking into the ceremony.
You won’t know what your friends were doing while you were getting ready.
While you’re talking outside, something ridiculous might be happening inside.
And while everybody is looking at you, another little story can be unfolding completely unnoticed.
You can’t possibly be everywhere.
That’s where we come in.
We’re not only interested in giving you photographs of the moments you remember.
We’re looking for the reactions, relationships, humour and split seconds you didn’t even know happened.
Wedding venues across Dorset
Dorset gives you plenty of choice.
Castles, country houses, barns, gardens, coastal venues and estates – each with its own character, pace and way of bringing people together.
We’ve photographed weddings at venues including Lulworth Castle, Mapperton House, St Giles House, Warmwell House, Minterne House, Kingston Maurward, Highcliffe Castle, Tithe Barn Symondsbury and more.
But whatever the setting, our approach stays the same.
We look at the people first.
How they use the space. Where the energy is. Where the quieter moments are happening. What the light is doing. What is unfolding naturally.
Because the venue matters, but it is never the whole story.
The place sets the scene. Your people make it yours.

Dorset weddings, in their words
Photography, film and another point of view
Some memories work perfectly as still photographs.
Others need sound and movement.
The voice cracking during a speech. The reaction as you walk back down the aisle. The noise of everybody you love being in the same room.
Smiling Tiger Studios offers wedding photography and film together or individually, using the same documentary philosophy across both.
And where the venue, weather and permissions allow, we can also add aerial footage.
Not because every wedding needs an epic drone shot.
Sometimes it simply gives us one more perspective on where your story happened.
The Smiling Tiger eye
Smiling Tiger grew from years spent working in professional photojournalism.
That taught us to watch beyond what’s being presented.
To anticipate.
To notice humour and contradiction.
To look at what’s happening around the edges while everyone else watches the middle.
And to understand that an imperfect photograph of something extraordinary will always matter more than a perfect photograph of nothing very much.
Today, the photographers representing Smiling Tiger aren’t selected because they can replicate one person’s photographs.
They’re chosen because they speak the same visual language.
Curiosity. Anticipation. Humour. Humanity. Timing. Connection.
Different photographers. Different personalities.
One recognisable way of seeing.
Dorset wedding photographer FAQ
Yes. Smiling Tiger Studios is based in Weymouth, Dorset, and photographs weddings throughout the county as well as Hampshire, Somerset and further across the UK.
No.
Knowing a venue can be useful, but we don’t rely on predetermined locations or recreate photographs from previous weddings.
We arrive early, assess the light, weather and spaces as they actually are that day, and work from there.
Your wedding is the important part, not whether we’ve previously stood in the room.
Yes. You can choose photography, film or combined photography and film coverage, with the same unobtrusive documentary approach running through both.
Usually very little.
We like finding a few short pockets during the day where you can step away together for around ten minutes. We’ll give you enough direction that you don’t have to wonder what to do, make some beautiful photographs and get you back to your guests.
Your photographs should fit around your wedding. Not the other way around.
Your wedding is for living
Dorset can give us castles, coastlines, countryside, extraordinary buildings and incredible light.
But none of those things will be the reason you come back to your photographs in twenty years.
The people will.
The faces.
The relationships.
The ones who made you laugh.
The ones who cried.
The ones who behaved terribly.
And all the little moments you didn’t even realise we’d seen.
Be with them.
We’ll pay attention.
