Do We Need Two Wedding Photographers? (Pros, Cons & When It’s Worth It)
If you’ve started researching your wedding photography options, you’ve probably seen the phrase “second shooter” pop up a few times. But what does it actually mean, and do you really need two wedding photographers on your day?
At Smiling Tiger Studios, I often get asked whether having a second shooter is necessary — and the answer is: it depends on your day, your priorities, and your guest count.
This guide will walk you through the pros, the potential downsides, and whether it’s the right call for your wedding.
What Is a Second Shooter?
A second shooter is an additional professional photographer who works alongside your lead photographer (that’s me!) to capture more angles, moments, and coverage throughout the day.
They’re not an assistant — they’re usually a skilled photographer in their own right, hired to work in tandem to expand the storytelling.

When a Second Wedding Photographer Makes Sense
1. You’re Getting Ready in Different Locations
If you and your partner are getting ready in different places at the same time, having two photographers ensures both stories are told — without any rushing or hopping between venues.
2. You Have a Large Guest List
More guests mean more moments — from hugs and laughter to surprise reactions. A second shooter helps cover candid moments between guests that the main photographer might not see.
3. You Want Two Angles of Key Moments
Whether it’s the first look or the ceremony, having two photographers means you can capture both your face and your partner’s reaction simultaneously — a really powerful storytelling element.
4. You Want Full Coverage Without Rushing
With two photographers, one can focus on details and behind-the-scenes shots while the other captures the main action. It’s a way of ensuring nothing gets missed.
When You Might Not Need Two Wedding Photographers
Intimate weddings: If you’re having a small, relaxed celebration with fewer than 50 guests, one experienced photographer can usually cover it beautifully.
Single venue all day: If prep, ceremony, and reception all happen in one place, logistics are simpler and less coverage overlap is needed.
You’re keeping things low-key: If you’re not fussed about loads of coverage or split angles, one documentary-style photographer might be plenty.
Pros of Having Two Wedding Photographers
✅ More angles, more moments
✅ Simultaneous coverage of both partners
✅ Greater variety in your final gallery
✅ Backup photographer in case of emergencies
✅ Helps during large group shots or when time is tight
How It Works with Smiling Tiger Studios
When couples choose to have two wedding photographers, you’ll have me (Linus) as your primary shooter, with Will stepping in as my second shooter.
Will’s not just any second — he knows exactly how I work, what I’ll be focusing on throughout the day, and where the story is unfolding. Rather than duplicating shots or getting in the way, he’s tuned into the flow of the day and looks for moments that complement the images I’m capturing. The result? A cohesive, layered gallery that tells your story in a beautifully natural and complete way.
Likewise, if you opt for both photography and video coverage, we simply switch roles. I’ll move into shooting video and aerial drone footage, while Will steps into the role of primary photographer. This setup gives us a major edge — we know exactly what each of us is aiming to capture, and we actively work together to make those moments happen, rather than competing for shots like separate teams might.
That collaboration is what allows us to create exemplary, emotionally-driven coverage, whether it’s photo, video, or both.
Are Two Wedding Photographers Worth It?
Here’s my honest take as someone who’s shot both solo and with a second photographer many times:
➡️ For larger weddings, complex timelines, or couples who really value full storytelling, two wedding photographers are absolutely worth it.
➡️ For more low-key, intimate weddings, one experienced photographer (who knows how to be in five places at once!) may be all you need.
