A Day in the Life of a Family Photoshoot: What to Expect

Booking a natural family photography session isn’t just about updating your wall art. It’s about capturing the essence of your family – the quirks, the laughs, the connections that matter most.

Still unsure what actually happens during a shoot? Here’s how it all flows – simple, relaxed, and beautifully unscripted.

Before the Shoot: Planning with Purpose

Ahead of the session, we’ll chat about location options and what sort of vibe you’re drawn to. Woodland walks? Windy coastal scenes? Rolling meadows? We know Dorset inside-out, and we’ll find a spot that complements your family’s energy.

Need help choosing what to wear? This post has you covered.

We’ll also cover what to bring, how to prep the kids, and ideas for including pets, grandparents or personal touches that matter to you.

Life moves fast. Let’s slow it down—just for a moment.

Book your natural family session in Dorset and walk away with images that truly mean something.

Arrival & Settling In

Once we meet on the day, there’s no rushing. We take a few minutes to ease into things – chat, play, let the little ones explore. It helps everyone feel grounded and gets us all into the right headspace.

There’s no ‘stand here, do this’ pressure. We ease into things organically, with you simply enjoying time together as a family.

Shooting Style: Unposed, Unfiltered & Full of Heart

The magic of our documentary family photography sessions lies in the unscripted. I might offer gentle direction or suggest a walk, a game, or a sit-down snuggle. But nothing is forced.

Expect:

  • Piggybacks and shoulder rides
  • Running, jumping, climbing
  • Tickle fights and bear hugs
  • Little ones exploring while we follow their lead

We capture all the in-between moments: the way your child reaches for your hand, the way you throw your head back when you laugh, the cuddles that just happen.

Time & Flow: No Stopwatch Here

Most shoots last around 60-90 minutes, depending on attention spans and weather. We keep it flexible. If everyone’s still having fun, we’ll keep going. If it starts to feel like enough, we wind things down.

This rhythm keeps things joyful and low pressure – exactly how family time should feel.

Afterwards: What Happens Next?

After the shoot, I go through all the images to hand-pick the very best. You’ll receive a beautiful gallery full of connection, warmth and life—the kind of photographs that make your heart ache in the best way.

From here, you can choose to download digital files or create heirloom prints and albums that will become part of your family’s visual history.
