Black and white: a bride and groom laughing at the top table as a guest pours drinks

The Smiling Tiger experience

You live it. We'll pay attention.

At Smiling Tiger Studios, we believe great wedding photography starts with protecting the experience itself.

Your wedding isn’t a photoshoot with a ceremony squeezed into the middle.

It’s one day when an extraordinary collection of people, relationships, histories and emotions somehow find themselves in the same place at the same time.

Your job is to be amongst it.

Talk too long to people. Hug them. Laugh until something hurts. Cry when you weren’t expecting to. Dance badly. Disappear together for ten minutes when it all gets a bit much.

Forget about us.

We’ll be looking everywhere else – at the things happening right in front of you and the stories developing around the edges.

You don’t need to create photographs for us.

You just need to have a wedding worth remembering.

Subtle. Emotive. Raw.

It starts before the wedding

Once you’ve booked Smiling Tiger, you’ve got us.

You’ll have direct access to the studio whenever you need it. We’ll offer advice where our experience is useful, but we don’t need to control every minute of your wedding.

Around a month beforehand, we’ll ask about timings, suppliers, the few family photographs that really matter and any relationships or circumstances we should understand.

Then, around a week before the wedding, we’ll talk.

We deliberately leave that final conversation close to the day because we want your people, your plans and your relationships fresh in our minds when we arrive.

After that, instinct can take over.

We understand enough beforehand to recognise what matters while it’s happening.

We don't just photograph who was there

We look for why they matter.

Relationships leave clues.

People who matter stand closer. They touch more. They look for one another across rooms. They hug differently. They stay nearby when something important is happening.

Those tiny pieces of human behaviour are something we’ve spent years learning to recognise.

Tell us that an aunt practically raised you and we’ll remember it.

But there’s every chance we’d have noticed there was something special between you anyway.

That’s the difference between recording who’s at a wedding and understanding what’s happening within it.

Present enough to see it. Quiet enough not to change it.

Documentary photography isn’t standing at the back waiting for something interesting to happen.

We’re constantly reading the room.

Where’s the energy? Who’s making everyone laugh? Who’s trying not to cry? What’s happening at the edge of the scene while everyone else is watching the middle?

Sometimes we’ll be right amongst it. Sometimes we’ll photograph from across the room. Sometimes the best thing we can possibly do is leave a moment alone.

We know how to belong in the room without becoming the centre of it. Friendly, approachable and part of the atmosphere – but always watching.

Because once a moment has gone, it’s gone.

Before. Through. After.

We don’t wait for the moment.

We watch for the possibility of one.

If something feels as though it’s developing, we’ll photograph before it happens, through it and until it’s finished.

Because sometimes the photograph isn’t the kiss.

It’s the expression immediately before it.

The reaction afterwards.

Or the person in the background who thinks nobody is looking.

And when everybody else is photographing the obvious, we’re also looking towards the edges.

Humour. Contradiction. Context. Subtext.

The epic and the off-piste.

And if we’re ever choosing between technical perfection and a genuine moment?

The moment wins. Hands down.

Your photographs fit around your wedding

Not the other way around.

Yes, we’ll take the family photographs.

We’ll gather the people who matter, organise everyone efficiently and get it done.

We’ll also steal you away for some time together. We’ll find good light, give you direction when you need it and make some beautiful portraits.

But we’re not disappearing with you for two hours while your wedding carries on without you.

Sometimes ten minutes is enough.

A chance to stop. Look at each other. Realise you’re actually married.

Then we’ll give you back to your people.

The things you didn't see

Here’s the strange thing about your own wedding.

You’ll miss loads of it.

You can’t see the expression on somebody’s face while you’re walking into the ceremony.

You won’t know what your friends were doing while you were getting ready.

While you’re talking outside, something ridiculous will happen inside.

And while everybody is watching you, another little story may be unfolding somewhere else entirely.

You can’t possibly be everywhere.

We can look everywhere.

That’s one of the things we love most about documentary photography.

Not simply giving you photographs of the moments you remember.

But giving you back the moments you didn’t even know happened.

While you were somewhere else...

More eyes. More of the story.

A wedding doesn’t happen in one place.

That’s why many Smiling Tiger weddings are covered by more than one of us.

More photographers don’t mean more interruption. They mean more of the story can be seen at the same time.

To see more without interfering more.

Different positions. Different perspectives. Different instincts.

More of your people. More reactions. More of what happened while you were somewhere else.

The Smiling Tiger eye is our creative standard

Smiling Tiger Studios grew from my years working as a professional photojournalist.

That world taught me to anticipate, react, watch the edges and understand that sometimes an imperfect photograph of something extraordinary is infinitely more valuable than a perfect photograph of nothing very much.

Those instincts became the foundation of Smiling Tiger Studios.

Every photographer working with Smiling Tiger Studios is selected because they speak the same visual language – not because they can replicate somebody else’s photographs.

Curiosity. Anticipation. Humour. Humanity. Timing. Connection.

Different photographers. Different personalities.

One recognisable way of seeing.

Subtle. Emotive. Raw.

When the wedding ends, our work doesn't

Before we sleep, your photographs and footage are already being protected – backed up onto separate storage and mirrored to the cloud.

Then thousands of frames are distilled into the strongest version of your story.

Technology helps us work efficiently and consistently, but the final judgement is always human. Every wedding passes through Smiling Tiger quality control before it reaches you.

Within 48-72 hours, we’ll usually send a small collection of photographs.

Our full galleries are usually ready within around 14 days.

But we don’t think that should feel like receiving a folder of files.

Your wedding. Here it is.

We believe delivery should feel like part of the experience, not simply an email with a gallery link.

Wait until you’re together.

Put the phones away.

Find the biggest screen you’ve got.

Connect the speakers.

Open something worth drinking.

And start at the beginning.

Don’t rush.

We want:

“I didn’t see that.”

“Look at Mum!”

“I’d forgotten about this.”

“How the hell did they catch that?”

Not for you to review your photographs.

For you to fall back into them.

And there may even be a short personal message from us waiting at the beginning, because after spending all that time watching your wedding, there are usually a few things we’d quite like to tell you about it.

You lived it once.

The photographs arrive first deliberately.

A still photograph has its own power. It lets you stop, look, notice and return to it.

So we give the photographs room to breathe.

Then comes something different.

Sound. Movement. Voices. Music.

Within around three weeks, we’ll normally send a short film preview, with the full highlight film following at around six weeks.

Same wedding.

A completely different way back into it.

Now you get to discover it.

We noticed this.

Then something arrives through the letterbox.

Within the week after your gallery, we’ll choose a photograph from your wedding that stood out to us.

It might not be the obvious one.

Perhaps it’s a look. A reaction. Someone important quietly watching from the edge of something.

A moment we noticed.

We’ll make a fine-art print and send it with a handwritten note explaining why we chose it.

Because sometimes the photograph we most want you to have isn’t necessarily the one you’d have thought to choose yourself.

Some photographs deserve to escape the screen

Once you’ve lived with the photographs for a while, we’ll help if you’d like to turn them into something more permanent.

We can create an initial album design rather than asking you to somehow choose a story from hundreds of photographs.

And if there’s an image that belongs on the wall, send us a photograph of the space. We can show you how different images, sizes and frame styles could actually look in your home.

No guessing.

Just finding the right photograph, in the right form, for the right place.

The wall that quietly says: WE DID IT.

From our couples

“You captured so many intimate moments whilst people were unaware of your presence, making it all the more special.”

Your wedding is for living

Your wedding is not there to create photographs for us.

Don’t worry about where we’re standing.

Don’t wonder whether we’ve seen something.

Don’t perform for us.

We’ll watch.

We’ll anticipate.

We’ll look towards the edges while everyone else is watching the middle.

And when it’s all over, we’ll give you back not only the wedding you remember…

but a whole other version you never got to see.
