The venue sets the scene. Your people make the story.

At Smiling Tiger Studios, we believe the setting should support the story, not become the story.

Hampshire gives weddings an extraordinary range of places to happen.

Woodland and open space around the New Forest. Country houses and historic estates. Old barns, abbeys, gardens and elegant rooms filled with people who’ve travelled from everywhere to be together.

Beautiful surroundings matter.

But they’re never really the story.

Your people are.

The anticipation before the ceremony. Someone trying not to cry. Friends who haven’t been together like this for years. The glance across the room. The ridiculous thing happening behind you while everybody else is looking the other way.

That’s where we find the photographs that matter.

Smiling Tiger Studios photographs weddings across Hampshire with a documentary approach shaped by years of photojournalism.

We don’t take you away from your wedding to create the story.

We find the story while you’re living it.

Subtle. Emotive. Raw.

Documentary wedding photography in Hampshire

Our approach is simple: your wedding is allowed to happen.

We’re not interested in turning it into a sequence of photographs that need to be manufactured before everyone can get back to enjoying themselves.

We’ll organise the family photographs.

We’ll give you direction when it’s useful.

And we’ll find a few small pockets of time for the two of you to step away, breathe and make some beautiful portraits together.

Then we’ll give you back to your wedding.

For most of the day, we’re observing.

Watching what’s developing. Reading relationships. Anticipating reactions.

Because the photograph worth keeping isn’t always happening where everyone expects it to.

Your photographs fit around your wedding. Not the other way around.

Hampshire never looks exactly the same twice

That’s part of what makes photographing weddings here interesting.

Soft woodland light in the New Forest can feel completely different from the big windows and architecture of a country house. A summer garden wedding asks something different of us than a winter celebration in an old barn.

And even somewhere we know well won’t look the same from one wedding to the next.

The season changes.

The weather changes.

The light changes.

Most importantly, the people change.

So we don’t arrive trying to recreate the photographs we made the last time we were there.

We arrive early, look at what exists that day and react to it.

Knowing a venue is useful. Knowing when to forget what happened there last time is just as important.

Because whether we’re photographing a wedding at Avington Park, Northbrook Park, Clock Barn, Burley Manor, Beaulieu Abbey or somewhere we’ve never worked before, the aim isn’t to photograph the venue as beautifully as possible.

It’s to understand how your wedding is happening within it.

The Smiling Tiger eye

The Smiling Tiger Eye is our creative standard – curiosity, anticipation, humour, humanity, timing and connection.

Great documentary photography isn’t simply about being unobtrusive.

It’s about noticing.

We watch what’s happening around the edges.

Scenes within scenes.

Humour hiding inside serious moments.

The person completely engrossed in what’s happening – and the child ten feet away doing something entirely different.

If something feels as though it’s developing, we’ll photograph before it happens, through it and until it’s finished.

Because sometimes the photograph isn’t the kiss.

It’s the anticipation just beforehand.

The explosion of laughter afterwards.

Or the reaction behind you that nobody else saw.

And if we’re ever choosing between technical perfection and an extraordinary human moment?

The moment wins. Hands down.

That instinct is what we call The Smiling Tiger Eye.

Curiosity. Anticipation. Humour. Humanity. Timing. Connection.

Different photographers. Different personalities.

One recognisable way of seeing.

The things you didn't see

Here’s the strange thing about your own wedding.

You’ll miss loads of it.

You can’t see the expression on somebody’s face while you’re walking into the ceremony.

You won’t know what your friends were doing elsewhere while you were getting ready.

You’ll be talking to one group while something hilarious happens behind you.

And while everybody is looking at the obvious moment, another story may be developing quietly somewhere else.

That’s one of the reasons we photograph the way we do.

We’re not simply recording what you remember.

We’re giving you back the things you didn’t even know happened.

While you were somewhere else...

Wedding venues across Hampshire

We’ve photographed celebrations at some brilliant Hampshire venues, from woodland and countryside settings to historic houses and barns.

Hampshire weddings, in their words

“...a common comment... is how the photographers managed to capture the shots they did, as no-one remembers them being there.”
Oliver Margisel
“They capture all the smiles, tears, laughter and the moments we were not there to see.”
Kate Sloss
“They spoke volumes about how much emotion and joy there was. And they transport us at a glance to the moment they were taken.”
Ayla Terzi, New Forest

Photography and film. One wedding.

Photography and film are approached as one story, not two separate productions.

Some moments work perfectly as still photographs.

Others need sound.

A voice breaking during a speech.

The noise as everybody reacts.

Music.

Movement.

The madness of the dancefloor.

Smiling Tiger Studios offers wedding photography and film individually or together, approached with the same philosophy.

We don’t need to manufacture moments for the film any more than we do for the photographs.

We observe.

We anticipate.

We let the wedding give us the story.

Where appropriate, aerial footage can add another perspective too – showing the landscape and setting without turning your wedding into a production.

Observed, not staged. Felt, not forced.

Hampshire wedding photographer FAQ

Do you photograph weddings throughout Hampshire?

Yes. Smiling Tiger Studios is based just across the county border in Dorset and photographs weddings throughout Hampshire, including the New Forest, Winchester, Southampton, Portsmouth and the wider county.

UK travel is included within our standard wedding collections, so there isn’t an additional Hampshire travel charge.

Do you need to have photographed our venue before?

No.

Venue knowledge can be useful, but sometimes seeing somewhere fresh is an advantage.

We arrive early, assess the spaces, weather and light as they actually are on your wedding day and work from there.

We’d rather respond to your wedding than recreate somebody else’s.

Do you still take family photographs and couple portraits?

Absolutely.

Documentary doesn’t mean leaving you entirely to your own devices.

We’ll organise the family photographs efficiently and give you enough direction during portraits that everything feels easy.

We simply don’t want either to dominate the wedding.

Do you offer wedding photography and video in Hampshire?

Yes. You can book photography, film or combined photography and film coverage.

When we’re working together, the team shares the same documentary philosophy so photography and film complement one another rather than competing for your attention.

When will we receive our photographs?

We normally aim to send a small preview within 48-72 hours, with the complete wedding gallery usually ready within around two weeks.

For film collections, we aim to deliver a short preview within approximately three weeks, followed by the complete highlight film at around six weeks.

Your wedding doesn't need to perform for us

Choose Hampshire because you love the venue.

The landscape.

The forest.

The architecture.

The atmosphere.

But twenty years from now, those probably won’t be the reason you keep returning to your photographs.

The people will.

The expressions.

The relationships.

The enormous laughs.

The quiet moments.

The people behaving exactly like themselves.

And all the things happening around you that you never even noticed.

Be amongst it.

We’ll pay attention.

We don't take you away from your wedding to create the story.

We find the story while you're living it.
