Discover the key traits of a great videographer
When it comes to capturing your wedding, video is often the unsung hero—quietly weaving together atmosphere, sound, movement and raw emotion. But with so many videographers out there, how do you choose the right one?
At Smiling Tiger Studios, we’ve been creating wedding films for years that are intimate, cinematic, and storytelling-led. Here’s what to look for when choosing a wedding videographer that fits you.
1. Style & Storytelling Approach
Just like photographers, videographers have different styles. Look for:
- Cinematic (sweeping drone shots, music-led edits)
- Documentary (real moments, natural flow, emotional pacing)
- Traditional (long-form coverage of the full day)
At Smiling Tiger Studios, our films are documentary-led with a cinematic touch—crafted to feel like your day, not a movie set.
Choose someone whose storytelling speaks to your heart.

2. Watch Full Films, Not Just Teasers
Highlight reels are beautiful—but you want to see consistency, pacing, and emotional arc. Ask to view:
- A full wedding highlight film (5–8 mins)
- Any additional edits they offer (ceremony, speeches, etc.)
Look for how it feels—not just how it looks.
3. Are They Unobtrusive?
The best wedding videographers blend into the day. You don’t want boom mics in your face or to feel like you’re on a film set.
We use small, discreet equipment and move instinctively—capturing moments as they happen without interruption.
You should barely know they’re there.
4. Experience & Calm Under Pressure
Weddings are fast-paced and emotional. Your videographer should:
- Adapt to changing timelines
- Handle tricky lighting or weather
- Work in sync with your photographer (bonus if they’re part of the same team)
Trust their experience to keep things flowing, even when the plan shifts.
5. Connection & Communication
You want someone you can talk to, ask questions, and trust on the day. The right videographer will:
- Listen to what matters most to you
- Understand your comfort zones
- Be warm, calm and quietly in tune with the energy of the day
It’s a relationship, not just a service.
