Can We Have Both Documentary & Group Shots?
Absolutely—this is one of the most common questions couples ask:
“We love the idea of natural, documentary wedding photography… but we also want a few group shots with family. Is that okay?”
The short answer? Yes. Always.
At Smiling Tiger Studios, we believe in blending honest, emotive storytelling with a few thoughtful, relaxed portraits that matter most to you.
Here’s how we approach it.
What Documentary Wedding Photography Isn’t
There’s a myth that if you choose a documentary photographer, you won’t get any posed shots.
But that’s not true.
Our style is documentary-led, which means we focus on capturing real moments as they unfold—but we’re also more than happy to step in and direct a few key group photos or portraits when it matters.
We just keep it simple, quick, and relaxed.

Group Shots That Feel Natural
We’ll usually suggest a short list of 6–8 key group combinations (think immediate family, wedding party, grandparents, etc.).
We keep it efficient, well-organised, and always light-hearted—so no one’s standing around forever.
These are the shots your parents and grandparents will treasure, and we make them feel natural and connected, not stiff or forced.
Couple Portraits With Zero Awkwardness
Yes—we’ll take you aside for a few portraits. But don’t worry, there’ll be no over-the-top posing.
Instead, we create a space where you two can simply be. Walk, chat, laugh, hold each other. We gently guide, but never direct a performance.
The result? Honest, romantic, soulful images that still feel very you.
You Don’t Have to Choose One or the Other
Documentary photography doesn’t mean missing out on the “important” shots. It means:
- Capturing the true emotion of your day
- Blending seamlessly into the background most of the time
- Stepping in only when needed—with warmth, clarity, and speed
You get the best of both worlds: real storytelling + the classic memories your families will appreciate.
Let’s Build a Photography Plan That Suits You
Every couple is different. That’s why we take time to understand your priorities, people and pace—so the photography fits around you, not the other way around.
