Choosing your perspective in Wedding Photography | Image of the Week #13

I see Wedding Photography as an art form within which to tell stories.

These stories although primarily attached to the wedding couple and their day, they can come in layers with different areas of focus. For instance, whether the layers be the bridal prep, the ceremony or the reception, its the voice / the style of the story teller that keeps you hooked and wanting to learn more.

This is where the storyteller’s choice of perspective comes into play. A good, creative perspective within wedding photography leads you to look at similar events differently. The want of treating an event with enthusiasm to ensure it doesn’t look like ‘same thing, different people’ , making it look completely different and captivating. This is my challenge and I relish it.

Within this shot, I was trying to get the scene setting shot without doing the ‘standard’ wide shot. Avoiding the other favourite of framing the scene looking in through a doorway, I went for the ‘other one’ of using a mirror reflection.

This approach says so much more about the scene and the day. The wedding reception was held at Portland House, a period property furnished with art deco pieces – the mirror being one of them. Unusual in its design I wanted to utilise this and capture a scene setter that said ‘ a little more’ about the day and the setting.
